बॉलीवुड की ‘ट्रेजेडी क्वीन’ मीना कुमारी की ख़ूबसूरती हो या एक्टिंग दोनों के ही फ़ैंस दीवाने थे. जितना बोलबाला इनकी एक्टिंग और अदाओं का था उससे कहीं ज़्यादा उनके निजी क़िस्से चर्चा में रहते थे. मीना कुमारी की ज़िंदगी से जुड़ा ऐसा ही एक क़िस्सा है, जो काफ़ी मशहूर है.

दरअसल, 1939 से 1972 तक मीना कुमारी की दमदार एक्टिंग के चलते हर किसी की ज़ुबान पर उनका ही नाम था. इतनी पापुलैरिटी के बाद भी प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री मीना कुमारी को पहचान नहीं पाए थे. हुआ ये था कि महाराष्ट्र के तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री ने शास्त्री जी को मुंबई के एक स्टूडियो में फ़िल्म ‘पाक़ीज़ा’ की शूटिंग देखने के लिए बुलाया था, तब शास्त्री जी उन्हें मना नहीं कर पाए और शूटिंग देखने के लिए स्टूडियो पहुंच गए.

इस क़िस्से का ज़िक्र करते हुए कुलदीप नैयर ने अपनी बुक ‘ON LEADERS AND ICONS: From Jinnah to Modi’ में लिखा,

लाल बहादुर शास्त्री जिस स्टूडियों में पहुंचे थे वहां पर उस समय के कई बड़े स्टार्स भी मौजूद थे, उनमें मीना कुमारी भी थीं. जैसे ही मीना कुमारी ने लाल बाहुदर शास्त्री को माला पहनाई, शास्त्री जी ने सहजता से मुझसे पूछा- ये महिला कौन है? मुझे हैरानी हुई फिर मैने उनसे कहा कि ये मीना कुमारी हैं. हालांकि, मुझे इस बात की उम्मीद उनसे नहीं थी कि वो सार्वजनिक तौर पर मुझसे पूछेंगे, लेकिन मैं उनके भोलेपन और ईमानदारी से बहुत प्रभावित हुआ था.

इसके बाद, जब शास्त्री जी स्पीच देने पहुंचे तो, उन्होंने स्पीच में मीना कुमारी को संबोधित करते हुए कहा था, मीना कुमारी जी, मुझे माफ़ कीजिएगा. मैंने आपका नाम पहली दफ़ा सुना है. भले ही लोगों को शास्त्री जी का ये अंदाज़ पसंद आया था, लेकिन इस बात को सुनकर मीना कुमारी के चेहरे पर शर्मिंदगी के भाव साफ़ नज़र आ रहे थे.

आपको बता दें, 7 साल की उम्र में ही फ़िल्मों में दस्तक देने वाली मीना कुमारी ने 33 साल तक सिनेमा पर राज किया, उन्होंने ‘दिल एक मंदिर’, ‘पाक़ीज़ा’, ‘आरती’, ‘परिणीता’, ‘बैजू बावरा’, ‘दिल अपना और प्रीत पराई’, ‘साहेब बीवी और ग़ुलाम’, और ‘काजल’ सहित कई फ़िल्मों में शानदार अभिनय किया.
